O IFT cultiva valores como:
Transparência. Buscar a excelência no uso e na gestão de quaisquer recursos utilizados em suas ações, promovendo sua divulgação e tornando públicos os seus resultados, de forma que as lições aprendidas estejam disponíveis a toda a sociedade.
Sustentabilidade. Promover boas práticas de manejo florestal buscando o contínuo aprimoramento de sua sustentabilidade ecológica, econômica e social, de modo a incentivar o uso múltiplo dos produtos e dos serviços florestais.
Inovação e inclusão. Buscar continuamente alternativas que possam resolver os desafios de conservação e de uso florestal com a menor complexidade possível, disseminando estas lições e informações de uma forma acessível aos trabalhadores e produtores amazônicos.
Dinamismo. Manifestar inquietação com os desafios postados ao bom uso das florestas amazônicas ainda não solucionados, adaptando novos sistemas e tecnologias, e promovendo investigação e a pesquisa aplicadas aos problemas existentes.
Ética e Justiça. Defender o princípio de que os benefícios da exploração da floresta e as responsabilidades de conservação têm de ser compartilhadas, de forma justa e proporcional, por toda a sociedade, com o objetivo de promover maior bem-estar social.
Seguindo estes valores, o IFT cumpre a sua missão por meio de quatro programas que visam:
Divulgar os benefícios do manejo florestal de uso múltiplo junto aos produtores de diferentes tamanhos, escalas, culturas e tecnologias;
Disseminar para as diferentes audiências os princípios de planejamento e de conservação florestal que tornam possível o bom manejo da floresta, independentemente dos recursos e dos equipamentos disponíveis em cada caso;
Replicar técnicas, informações, conhecimentos e lições aprendidas que possam ser cruciais na execução, no planejamento, nas escolhas, nas discussões ou nas reflexões sobre as possibilidades de uso e de conservação florestal por empreendimentos públicos e privados de diferentes escalas e naturezas;
Multiplicar conhecimentos, informações, práticas ou princípios a todos os interessados em temas de uso múltiplo de florestas naturais amazônicas por meio de replicadores de manejo florestal.
Programas
O IFT Se dedica aos seguintes programas:
• Programa Capacitação e Treinamento – Principal programa do IFT, capacita profissionais e trabalhadores florestais para implementar as boas práticas de manejo florestal por meio de cursos práticos. São alvo dos treinamentos desde trabalhadores da exploração florestal, como motosserristas e operadores de máquinas, a técnicos de nível médio, engenheiros e tomadores de decisão. O Programa de Capacitação e Treinamento do IFT foi desenvolvido para incorporar as lições aprendidas em pesquisas e testes realizados pela instituição e o conhecimento tradicional empírico de seus instrutores e colaboradores. Em 2014, esse programa completa 18 anos de existência, tendo ultrapassado a cifra de 6.000 profissionais capacitados.
• Programa de Extensão Florestal – Um experimento conduzido em áreas florestais do IFT em 1996 demonstrou que as práticas de manejo florestal, além de trazerem maiores benefícios ecológicos e sociais, incluindo uma redução de 50% nos danos provocados à floresta, produziram madeira a um custo 12% menor do que a madeira produzida com as práticas convencionais. Ainda hoje, a grande maioria das empresas utilizam práticas convencionais muitas vezes pela falta de conhecimento sobre os benefícios do manejo florestal. Deste modo, o programa de Extensão Florestal do IFT visa conduzir eventos e palestras para sensibilizar empresários, líderes comunitários, pequenos produtores, jornalistas, consumidores, estudantes, pesquisadores, professores, trabalhadores, entre outros, em manejo florestal.
• Programa de Pesquisa florestal aplicada – O IFT tem conduzido com sua própria equipe ou em cooperação com Universidades e Instituições de Pesquisa, pesquisas científicas para aprimorar o manejo florestal. Tais estudos são importantes para comprovar a rentabilidade econômica do manejo florestal – frente aos modelos predatórios de uso florestal na região –, determinar os impactos ecológicos da exploração em espécies sensíveis e no crescimento futuro da floresta, além de investigar os possíveis avanços e aprimoramentos técnicos para tornar o manejo florestal continuamente mais rentável para o empreendedor florestal. Paralelamente, a pesquisa busca demonstrar como os serviços ambientais proporcionados pelas florestas são mantidos com o manejo florestal.
• Programa de Manejo Florestal Comunitário e Familiar – é o mais recente programa do IFT, que se utiliza dos demais programas e tem como público alvo as populações tradicionais e produtores florestais de pequena escala da Amazônia. O objetivo deste programa é apoiar, tutorear e assessorar produtores florestais de pequena escala e comunidades tradicionais em suas escolhas produtivas relacionadas direta ou indiretamente ao uso e à conservação de florestas. Com isso, o IFT busca apoiar o desenvolvimento e o aprimoramento de modelos de manejo florestal comunitário e familiar em florestas públicas, como Unidades de Conservação de uso Sustentável, assentamentos ambientalmente diferenciados da região amazônica.

Ethics and Justice. Defending the principle that the benefits of forest exploitation and conservation responsibilities must be shared, fairly and proportionally, by the entire society, with the aim of promoting greater social well-being.
By observing these values, IFT fulfills this mission through four programs geared at:
Promoting the benefits of multiple-use forest management with the producers of different sizes, scales, cultures and technologies;
Disseminating to different audiences the principles of forest conservation that allow for good forest management, regardless of the resources and the equipment available in each case;
Replicating techniques, information, knowledge and lessons learned that can be crucial in the implementation, planning, choices, discussions or thoughts on the possibilities of forest use and conservation by public and private enterprises of different scales and natures;
Multiplying knowledge, information, practices or principles for everyone interested in themes related to the multiple use of natural Amazon forests through forest management replicators.
Programs
IFT is dedicated to the following programs:
• Qualification and Training – Intended for qualifying and training different stakeholders in the forest sector (ranging from chainsaw operators to managers) in the planning, implementation and dissemination of good practices for managing tropical forests.
• Forestry Extension – Seeks to “demystify” forest management by showing the different players the social, economic and environmental benefits of the activity.
• Applied Research – Aims to improve forest management practices by adapting forest management to technical and technological advances, but without losing sight of environmental conservation.
• Community and Family Forest Management – Seeks to support and assist small-scale forest producers and communities in their production choices either directly or indirectly related to the use and conservation of forests.
• Qualification and Training Program – The main program of IFT, enables professionals and forest workers to implement the good practices of forest management through practical courses. The target audience for said training course includes workers in the timber harvesting industry such as chainsaw operators and machine operators, medium-level technicians, engineers and decision makers. The Qualification and Training Program of IFT was developed to incorporate the lessons learned from research and testing conducted by the institution and the traditional, empirical knowledge of its instructors and collaborators. In 2014, this program completed 18 years of existence, having trained over 6,000 professionals.
• Forestry Extension Program – An experiment conducted in forest areas of IFT in 1996 showed that forest management practices, in addition to bringing about greater ecological and social benefits, including a 50% reduction in the damage caused to the forest, produced timber at a cost 12% lower than the timber produced through conventional practices. Still today, the vast majority of companies use conventional practices often due to lack of knowledge of the benefits of forest management. This way, the Forestry Extension Program of IFT aims to hold events and lectures on forest management to raise the awareness of businessmen, community leaders, small producers, journalists, consumers, students, researchers, teachers/professors, workers, amongst others.
• Applied Forestry Research Program – IFT has conducted scientific research to improve forest management using its own team or in cooperation with universities and research institutions. Said studies are important to prove the economic viability of forest management – against the predatory models of forest use in the region –, to determine the ecological impacts of the harvesting of sensitive species and the future growth of the forest, in addition to investigating the possible advances and technical enhancements to make forest management continuously more profitable for the entrepreneur. At the same time, the research seeks to demonstrate how the environmental services provided by the forests are maintained with forest management.
• Community and Family Forest Management Program – It is the latest program of IFT, which uses other programs and is designed for traditional populations and small-scale forest producers in the Amazon. The goal of this program is to support, teach and assist small-scale forest producers and communities in their production choices either directly or indirectly related to the use and conservation of forests. By that, IFT seeks to support the development and improvement of community and family forest management models in public forests such as Sustainable Use Conservation Units, environmentally differentiated settlements in the Amazon region.[:]
